I didn’t watch this movie the first time I saw the series, but after just rewatching and checking this out, I think it’s good. doesn’t top the anime in my opinion but the majority of the movie is a good successor to nge. I loved the action in the first half and the analysis with shinjis psych in the second, but a few things with rei and the ending is confusing. I think it’s kind of up to interpretation. I believed shinji realized he couldn’t wish the pain and trauma he’s endured on everyone else, even though he feels alone. same with asuka despite not seeing much of her in the second half. that’s what I think the end is, them deciding to live and accept the fact that life can be hellish sometimes. I have not watched any explanations yet so maybe my opinion will change but I believe rei could bring everyone who turned to the orange goo back and restore humanity. the damage after she began to merge everyone is gone but not everything with the war and everyone who died previously is not coming back. I’m still confused though who knows tbh. but I did like and appreciate some of the characters more in this, like asuka (but not misato why did you get rid of my faith). now i need to watch the rebuild series !!
