Disappointed in the movie, "His Only Son".
If you have seen the Easter trailer there is an incredible song playing in the background which explains the movie perfectly. However, that song was not any part of the actual movie; nor was the explanation.
Of course, many were brought to Angel Studios via The Chosen, so let me give an example. In the story of the healings and the rooftop meeting with Nicodemus - to begin the show we were shown the story in the desert of the brass serpent to be held high for anyone to look upon and their faith would heal them. That one story was explained within the episode. If a person were to see no other epidode, they left with a clear understanding of that story. This movie didn't even take the viewer that far into understanding.
For those who know the story of the sacrifice of Isaac, there was nothing interesting really - lots of slow walking, a little dialog, and too many closeups for comfort. For those who dont know the story, it was so barren that they were pulled in and then nothing was explained. I asked one person who did not know the story at all, why she thought the crosses were presented at the end (about 2 minutes filming). She said, "I think to remind us that Easter is coming. It's an Easter movie."
That is how little the gospel was shared. Many of us know the correlation between the story of Abraham and the Gospel. But for those who do not, this was a missed opportunity to present it to them. Perhaps it was mostly disappointing because I was so excited to take unchurched friends to see it, to engage in wonderful conversations afterward.
One person said the way Abraham's visits from God were presented, it reminded him of the dreams of Joseph Smith or any cult leader. I do not believe that was the message the studio was trying to presnt. It did open up dialog but not in the hopeful way I had anticipated when I bought all the tickets.
