The story and characters are completely different. While some scenes in the movie are similar to the book, the overall story is completely different. In the movie, Artemis Fowl needs to find the Aculos to save his father. The book doesn't mention the word "Aculos" even once. In the book, Artimis Fowl's goal is to kidnap a fairy and hold her for ransom. This is a great example of what not to do when making a movie version of a book. This movie does not deserve the name "Artemis Fowl". Do not watch it.
