I just finished watching The Wonder and I was very pleasantly surprised at how well done this movie was. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Spoiler Alert:
The Wonder slowly unfolded the past of a young girlโs suffering although her family and community embraced the secrets. Yes, Anna did have a level of faith which was good, but she also used her faith as an addiction. Hiding a deep trauma, she used religion as an escape just like someone would use alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. (Whenever someone uses something continually to avoid pain instead of feeling pain, thatโs an addiction.) God did hear Annaโs prayer and through the courageous action of the nurse, she was able to escape her bondage, was set free and started a new life. Thank God!
It was interesting to see how delusional a community (including the family) can be and not recognize the real problem (trauma) but to intellectualize the problem away. Meanwhile this young girl was dying. Lots of secrets going on. Lots of hidden stories. Sadly, humanity has struggled forever to use words to articulate oneโs feelings.
The nurse also struggled with her own personal pain and was able to let go at the very end.
I loved the symbolism of the bird. In and out. In the cage (bondage), out of the cage (set free).
Excellent acting. Slow and steady suspense. Overall, very well done!
