Don't even try to compare both Top Guns; the only thing they have in common is that they're both awesome movies, just in different ways. Here's a list of several qualities, followed by which Top Gun movie did it better:
CASTING: TG1 had much better cast.
ACTION/SUSPENSE: TG2 has extreme intense action
MUSIC: TG1 by far
CINEMATOGRAPHY: TG2 for sure (better technology)
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: TG1 was far better
COMEDY: TG1, though TG2 had one good laugh out loud
PILOTS: TG1 without a doubt
EXCITEMENT FACTOR: TG2 All the way
STORY LINE: Both movies are tied
EMOTION/FEEL: Nothing can top TG1, but TG2 had nostalgia
Even though I gave TG1 more ratings, I think TG2 will appeal more to the the younger generation. [!!!-spoilers alert beyond this point- !!!] I teared up when I saw Val Kilmer. I didn't expect it, maybe because I haven't seen him in years and I know what he's gone through. I was REALLY glad that he spoke a little for his role.
I loved howTom Cruise welcomes you before the movie; it's a great personal touch that was very nostalgic for me. I also loved how well they explained the logistics and dangers of the mission they were embarking on, so you knew exactly what the plan was. And Maverick crashing behind enemy lines; I did NOT see that coming at all! But hijacking an F-14 TOMCAT was the ultimate!
Lastly, I want to explain my disappointment with the casting of the pilots, except for Goose's son (great resemblance to goose, but maybe overdid the whole 'angry at Maverick' thing a bit.) The pilots looked like wimpy little millenial KIDS, not men. The pilots in TG1 were muscular, much more masculine and macho, cocky, crass (of course, we were MEN in the 80's, and we weren't confused about it!). It's too bad the 'woke' crowd had to throw the token female pilot in there for political correctness, which totally killed the "manly" vibe that was TOP GUN. You can't have guys just being 'guys' when a female is hanging around, because all you think about these days is sexual harassment. But anyway, her presence did nothing whatsoever for the film, but this movie is STILL PHENOMENAL!!
Also, I really missed not seeing Tom Skerrit (VIPER) and Michael Ironside (JESTER), because I thought they'd be in it. I also wanted to see the bald guy, but nope. Surprisingly, I didn't really miss Kelly McGillis, though she WAS essential in TG1. Jennifer Conelly made a pretty good Penny Benjamin, and the love scenes came close to being too much, but they worked out okay. (nobody wants to see 60-year-olds getting it on!)
I just can't say enough about the cinematography, that part you just have to see for yourself. The first and the last action scenes are just insane, you'll be climbing up the back of your seat, I promise you. DO NOT RENT TG2, this movie is a MUST SEE IN THEATER, so don't wait!
