Incredibly gripping in the darkest comedy I have ever seen. From the first moment we meet Catherine and her friend swinging on ropes which are lined with colorful fallen tree leaves and spiralled in flowers, begins a take of a young girl with a beautiful vision and herself being a very special person for these times, some might even say, a leader.
Catherine is a patriotic Russian girl with every fibre of her being, and lock of her long, bright & twisty-curly blonde hair. She's an avid reader and is familiar with the recent works of France of new forming ideas, expressions of the mind, the heart and some from the deepest souls ever to have the graced Europe. Catherine is naturally swept up in this cultural explosion and wants to incorporate this into her life with Emperor Peter (the not so great) of Russia. However Emperor Peter is an unhinged, narcissistic, brat. This leads to an annoyance at the very least to the Royal Council. There is the priest Archie, V the general of the Russian army against the Swedish (revered to as "the Swedes") said Emperor Peter himself during the reception of his wedding to Catherine shortly into the first episode.
The writing is quite tactful, the performances are tremendous with Nicholas Hoult being absolutely marvelous as a Brat King who you love to hate and is constantly up to something (while talking about it consistently).
There is some disturbing violence throughout the season. Not for everybody, but it's so good.
