I just read part of a review that "Amy Poehler just made a feminist movie for teenagers that may not need it". Whoever the f*** wrote that has no clue about the lives of women. The fact that Ms. Poehler found funding & support for this movie, is amazing even in this day and age.
I regularly hear "I want to hit that thing" in movies and TV shows that were filmed in the last 5 years. Women still only make 70% of men's pay for doing the same job and for women of color, specifically, the amount is even farther apart. Girls and women are being told that they still can't do certain things. Male athletes still get larger contracts and far more coverage for their sports than women. My niece is very concerned about her appearance as a 10th grader, because she doesn't fit the typical "model" pictures in magazines, on TV and in other forms of media. She is very smart and a good athlete, but she down plays those qualities.
At the end of this movie, my 1st thoughts were " I wish this film was based on a true story. I hope this is a true story."
I wish it were true that we no longer have to speak about feminism or that we still have to continue to address prejudice in all of its forms. Unfortunately, women in the USA and all over the world are still subjugated by those in power.
Why is the thought of equality for all still so frightening to a significant number of people around the world.
We just celebrated Black History Month and now it is Womens History Month. If discussions about equality for all was no longer needed, than celebrating individual groups of people would no longer be needed. The information would already be part of the every day conversations and prejudice would be a figment of our imagination.
Amen to Amy Poehler and her new movie!!!
