Original is a vast understatement. A story exhibiting mighty vision, depth and insight ironically coupled with a summary epic style. The novel subtends a bare 200+ pages but leaves one thinking a vast expanse of time and evolution has taken place in the mindโs eye. Impressions received from a first reading at 13-14 years old pale in comparison to those experienced when reading the book again in my early forties, after studying and synthesizing more than 1400 books on physics, psychology, geopolitics, European art and literature...as well as history.
Got a lot more out of it the 2nd time in other words, inspiring me to synthesize further, especially as a teacher, scientist and father of successful children; this serves as a testimony to Clarkeโs 1953 vision.
Although Clarke had a few weaknesses with his attempt to portray humanity in a realistic meaningful way, his focused showcasing of just a few protagonists and their successors in Childhood's End formed a concise, literary masterpiece. One of the best in his field, hands down.
I buy extra copies of these, give them away and anticipate enjoyable conversations.
