This classic film provides a window into the horrors of the Civil war, racial prejudice, and courage of the Massachusetts 54th infantry. While the first half the movie is slowly paced, it picks up from the scene when Denzel Washington (Oscar-winning performance) is punished for desertion.
How can you not be moved by the single tear from Denzel Washington, who is filled with so much anger that he is numb to pain? I think this also was a superb performance by Morgan Freeman who grows in leadership and wisdom. Matthew Broderick also grows in courage as he boldly leads the charge on Ft. Wagner (knowing the sacrifice it would require).
I think this film should be required viewing for all 7th and 8th graders in U.S. history classes (and their parents as well).
