This is not everyoneโs cup of tea. Iโm not sure it wouldโve been mine before I spent a year stuck in my house, world turned upside down.
If you ever saw Zoolander, that might be the best predictor I can think of if youโll enjoy or hate this.
Itโs silly, goofy, surrealist, odd, and clever. It mashes up middle school innocence with adult humor. And middle school humor, too. In fact, much of the movie makes sense to me if you imagine the adults as all being in middle school. I really want someone to ask Wiig about that!
And Dornan needs to do more comedy.
And sing more. (Thatโs his real voice, wow!)
What I appreciate about this movie is that one thing it never does is treat the womenโs friendship as a joke. One is divorced, one is widowed, and they are each otherโs rock. Thereโs no โfrenemyโ BS here - these women unselfconsciously love each other and support each other, and it works because in real life theyโre genuine best friends for years.
It is not art. Itโs not โcinemaโ. It has no explicit sex scenes (only implied), no violence, and very few curse words... lots of culottes, โthat guyโ in a Speedo at every Florida pool, a big almost bollywood-style dance number, a villain with a diabolical plan, a lot of bright colors, and a very wise old talking crab.
Itโs five stars because it made me happy on a random Thursday night for two hours, and I never once regretted spending $20 to rent it.
