I had big expectations for this show, as I’ve really enjoyed Flanagan’s other work, esp hill house and Bly manor. A few eps in, I was intrigued, I was hooked, I really loved the first scene setting episode. This small fishing village on an island around who knows where, destitute and aimless, economy affected by climate change and bad luck. What ppl won’t do for a bit of hope in their lives! But I dunno, it moved away from key themes, became self-indulgent and an experiment in scripture recitation. By the end I was disappointed .. I wanted fantastical supernatural romp, some action from our heroes, esp the ‘prodigal daughter’ - instead it just falls flat. Watch it! Still worth a watch if you like his work. And explain to me in better words what didn’t work…coz something was off. Maybe I’m just not that into Catholicism or monologues about fœtus heaven.

Dreamlike neon absurdity, horror as psychedelic trip. Our hero arrives in LA mysteriously, from the woods with her recently filmed horror short. Upon a Weinsteinesque power play that sees her removed from her director role, what’s a dark-haired beauty to do but turn to the dark arts for revenge? If you like vomiting up kittens and plenty of gore, enjoy! Sex magic was a let down.. the spell was built up in previous episodes but came out boring and mechanical. I think sticking hands into her weird side hole and getting off on that was far more horrific and gross. I stopped liking the heroine/lead, as she stopped being sympathetic. I don’t think peyote is a good enough excuse. However, it was the point (ppl do horrible things for success!)… but without her anchoring the show I didn’t even finish the final ep. 3.5/4 for the kittens

This is a very okay slasher film for a new generation. Some things were done differently stylistically.. like staring at the killer in slow motion instead of hitting her/him. But maybe that’s a more realistic response? Just not that much fun in a slasher. I liked the main character and didn’t mind the secret r/ship with the town loner. Tho come on dude, stop letting her hide you for no explained reason. 2.5-3

I love Bob Odenkirk. And while yes, this movie is in the realm of John Wick, I just loved it much more and found it far more memorable a film. The film’s style is quick and fun, the morning routine and the bus are stand outs. Odenkirk characters have a very relatable heaviness of living with a mask and resenting the world for it; of wanting to be free from playing the game of life. His break bad was a little too sudden for me, and his character had a little too much depth (coz of his acting) to ignore the morality issues of unprovoked murderous rampages that make john wick films fun. Otherwise still 5 stars for fun!
