Ricky Gervais is brilliant. His ability to bring out the best and the worst in human behaviour is just magical. Although his character in after life was an obnoxious, self-centred uncaring and rude person to everyone that knew him. Deep down, he was in hell after the loss of his wife and he was disappointed each day, when he woke up from sleep only to realise he was still living and this meant another day of torture for him and everyone around him. The only one that didn't really suffer his behaviour was his dog; the only one that relied on him for life.
After watching the first 2 or 3 episodes of after life, I wasn't sure that I would watch the rest. It saddened me because I also lost my wife through recurring cancer after 25 years of marriage. My beautiful wife had to endure 12 years of the disease slowly take over her life after recurring in different organs throughout her body. I don't believe I allowed myself to understand what would happen eventually and now I realise she always thought about how to make our lives, including our two sons, a normal family life. It's been 20 years almost since I lost my beautiful bride and never a day goes by that she is not in my thoughts and in my heart.
Thanks for After Life Ricky. I have watched both series and I will watch the next one later in 2021. I cried many times but it made me understand how lucky I was to share my life with my wife for those 25 years and I still have my two wonderful sons that are who they are because of her.
