Ok. So to start off, I am a HUGE Disney fan, the kind of fan that memorized ALL the lines of the movies because she just watched them too many times, like every day of the month until she can memorize the lines, the songs and the images so she can keep watching the movie when she is dreaming.
Now that I made clear of how much I love Disney here is what I think:
GOOD PARTS:
* Amazing visuals! You feel like you're really in the Lion King movie brought to life for you! You feel the nostalgia in your skin as you watch the iconic beginning of the movie part by part and it never fails to disappoint you on how beautiful it looks!
*The voice actors really got it right. JD McCrary and Shahadi deserve an award for their great performance. You can feel their innocence in their voices. Zazu is no longer player by Rowan Atkinson (AKA Mr. Bean) and that made me sad but John Oliver was as funny as Atkinson was. James Earl Jones! Ah! You gotta love him as Mufasa! Donald Glover was the perfect guy to play Simba, really! Beyonce did better than I expected, because she played Nala, not herself which is a big difference.
*The score was good but the original was also good, so could they actually ruin it? Because, you know, Elton John and Hans Zimmer together? They are both amazing. In fact, besides the new Beyonce's song "Spirit", Elton John wrote and sung at the credits "Never Too Late" which I loved it as I listened on Spotify and the movies.
BAD PARTS:
*It was beautifully stunning visual, like it looked real. But that's the problem. It was too real, which it might sound stupid to say but when animals look too real it makes you feel like you're watching a documentary with people talking for the animals. Animals are animals in CGI. In cartoon, they are very "humanized" to show emotions and here it lacks that. It lacks the emotion when Lion King is a movie that brings so much emotion to the audience, making us cry, smile and laugh, the 2019 version can't do the same.
* Lack of emotion. I know I said it in the bullet above but it's different... The jokes are okay but some of the original's best jokes were taken out or the animals could not deliver it (not their fault after all they are just animals). Simba won't cry for his father's death because lions don't cry, or laugh at Zazu because lions don't laugh, and for some reason his father's death didn't feel like a big deal because his scream was kind of cut off.
* The songs are good but for some reason they cut off the "Be prepared" in half and it is not as grand as the original one. In fact, it feels like Scar is scared of the Hyenas. Maybe they made is short to put a long scene to show Rafiki that Simba is alive instead of just using the wind ( which made and still makes sense).
* It is much more of a serious movie rather than magical and funny. Some serious and great lines like "You can learn from the past" from Simba and Rafiki's conversation which is very very very short in this new version. Funny lines from Timon and Pumba and Rafiki are reduced or changed, that's one thing I would not mind being exactly the same.
So I don't want to give a thumbs up or down because I didn't like but I also didn't dislike it. It was a good movie to watch but I don't think I would rewatch it since I didn't feel any emotion during the movie.
Disney movies are great because of what they make you feel not because they awe you.
