Wheel of time has long been some of my favourite novels were ever written, and I've been excited for this adaptation from the first moment I heard of it.
Yes, they cut out so, so much- yet honestly, that's every TV adaptation ever. I think if any of us went into this expecting a full, perfect rendition of thousands of pages of material we're asking far too much. As it is, the series stands on a knife's edge of trying to touch as many major points as possible with a very limited timeframe while still trying to develop its characters and the world at the same time, and that's difficult and I can't really fault the writers for that too much. I could list characters I'm quite disappointed got cut (No Elyas? No Elayne? No Green Man? Really?) but for every one of those, we have something that was included and done to perfection. My only major complaint and reason for 4 stars over 5 is the tone of the show- the books sprinkle in light-hearted moments, absurdity, and clever quips to get a range of emotions while the series really only touches on love and war to the exclusion of all else. For example, where's Rand wishing he could talk to girls like Perrin at the same time Perrin's wishing he could talk to girls like Rand that would've taken seconds.
Be that as it may, we have a series that stands on its own merits and will bring new fans to Robert Jordan's masterpiece- and both of those are admirable points to me.
