Absolutely fun movie, good animation, different style vs just rehashed material, and think thereโs some deeper themes. I felt compelled after reading other reviews, to provide some an alternative perspective.
[Spoilers ahead]
1. The fact this movie is being accused of sexism is kind of ridiculous. They literally turned the whole damsel in distress notion upside down and I enjoyed it throughly challenging conventional gender roles. The Prince is the one being swooned over, is essentially sheltered and fits the Damsel in distress.
2. The main characters are clearly Latino, so also struggling with the white washing accusations.
3. The Hero Lenore is clearly the Bad@zz and itโs refreshing to see an empowered roguish female lead, who is a little bit of an anti-hero at the start and has to deal with opening up emotionally. (Again bucking gender stereotypes)
4. Love and infatuation are at the center of the story. The whole encouraging cheating is ridiculous. The curse is he has no conception of love, because everyone is just superficially obsessed.
All in all fun movie, different, and seems misunderstood, but they did a great job overall. 4 out of 5 stars only because the clueless prince felt a little overplayed.
