If I could rate it in the negatives I would. Not only did she work with a hate group that advocates for eugenics for writing an autistic character (Autism Speaks, one google search and it will become clear that they do NOT support the autistic community), but there's blackface as well. They casted a white actor to play a biracial character, then they tanned her skin to make her look darker and put braids in her hair. I shouldn't have to explain why that's disgusting. It's insane that this put out this movie. The main character plays into every harmful stereotype for autistic people, the movie infantilizes her and she is clearly made for a nuerotypical audience, so they can pat themselves on the back and feel good about themselves. Every autistic that I've seen speak out about this movie has said that the way 'music' acts is more similar to the people who would bully and mock them in school than any autistic person. The movie made them feel like someone was making fun of them. It does not matter what your intentions are, if the community you are showcasing tells you that your portrayal of them is offensive, then it's offensive. The movie also shows Music being restrained in a dangerous way multiple times, and there is no warning about these scenes or how they harmful. Being restrained in the way the movie shows has killed many people, and there is an increase of these incidents due to this movie. Let me repeat this, this movie is not only offensive to the autistic community, but dangerous as well. Being restrained this way, or restrained in any way by someone who is not trained for it, is one of the biggest dangers autistic people, especially children, face. Please do not watch this movie, if you are really too curious to avoid it then watch/read peoples run throughs of it, but do not give this woman your money or support. If you want to support the autistic community in other ways you can sign petitions to ban this movie, boycott the golden globes (They nominated this movie for multiple awards), and donate to organizations that actually help autistic people.
