The author of this story made one factual mistake. When Alan Alda's character was talking about his marriage and how much his wife wanted children, but he was unable to father children because of a WWII injury, he said: "It wasn't easy back then to adopt". I beg to differ. After WWII there were THOUSANDS of orphaned children roaming Europe searching for their families and not knowing if hey were alive or dead. Many orphans survived in the woods so authorities wouldn't find them and force them to get away. Surely, as a Jewish couple, they could have adopted one or more Jewish orphans if they'd just made the effort.
