Brightburn could have been better than it was. Being a Gunn production, the gore doesn't surprise me. We saw this with Dawn of the Dead and Slither. When it happens, I felt it made sense. After the likes of Deadpool, I won't complain over any R-rated Superhero film. What bothers me about Brightburn is the notion of how Brandon becomes evil. I would have preferred it be either a set of choices he made or events that happened to him to make him lose his way (much like Erik becoming Magneto). Brightburn instead takes The Omen route and says, "This kid is just evil." Good story, just not the best execution.
