Guess there must be two versions of "Ad Astra" out there; NY Times, Variety et al are all gushy about the version its critics saw, but the one we paid cash to see... well, the special effects were mostly good, but several parts of the plot line were all but implausible. And the script! Good gosh! Did someone find a sci-fi script written in the 50s in the trash and try to freshen it? Reviews say it did a good-to-great job developing the relationship between father and son. And maybe the script did that. But it sure didn't go anywhere close to deep. Brad Pitt probably did the best he could, and Tommy Lee Jones was able to coast, but that's it for "character development."
