It's my first hayao miyazaki movie. This movie can be enjoyed through various lenses, you can become an art aficionado and watch before your eyes materialiaze a series of beautiful paintings, or you can watch life's journey of a young dreamy boy with good heart in the backdrop of WW2. From the very first frame of a lush green misty japanese town to colorful world of child's dream to a despairing scene of a catastrophic fire engulfing cities, this movie fills your appetite for beautiful art. It leaves you in a state of mind where you feel a deeper connect to your surrrounding, allowing you to relish small pleasures of life. As a story teller hayao miazaki chooses to impart life's wisdom to the protagonist in the dream sequences where the planes flap their wings, where people are immune from death and where things come into being as and when needed. In this logic defying dream world where the characters even joke about the ridiculus nature of dreams, you as a viewer are freed from shackles of logic ,plausibility and rationality and in this free state of mind which is accepting everything as is, absorb the nuggets of wisdom about realizing your dreams and unlocking your true potential in this limited span of youthful years without being constrained by your immediate reality. In story department there were few misses, few story arcs were not properly woven into the story and felt shallow such as the secret police going after the protagonist, also there were times when transition in story arcs were abrupt. Overall I had a wonderful experience watching this movie and I am excited to explore other works of hayao miazaki.
