It starts with a smart introduction full of promises and intrigue. At mid season, the characteristic Mexican drama unraveled with yelling, sex, alcohol, informal economy and references to the current Mexican war on drug, the missing "students" and a clear political bias on favor of drug legalization.
"Chela" is a kind of mixed Mob and illegal market leader that was born in the "Barrio" and no matter where she is, she has the "Barrio" in her head. She feels patriotic about her "Barrio" and her way of life which is carefully silver-lined by the editor. At the same time, the Mexican government, the military and the CIA are demonized at the the best Castro-regimen style.
This production reminds me of a Venezuelan soup opera called "Por estas calles" in which the editor romanticize, sympathize and justify the rise of the "Bolivarian" Revolution.
