In short, this book is simple but intense.
I’m a very sympathetic person; thus, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It made me laugh, cry (a little too much), grimace, and gasp at many different times. In fact, I completed the book in the span of four days! I love it, it’s very thrilling, imaginative, and a bit gross. Also, it scared me at times pretty well as intended! The writing is perfectly descriptive and not difficult to follow in the least. For me, I give it a hearty 5/5.
However, although this story is intriguing, from an objective standpoint, I believe that this book has potential to do more. Firstly, the book’s greatest setback is its dry character development. This book is full of characters. Unfortunately, many, besides Rex and Leif, are not introduced through nuance and are instead brought in suddenly through narration. For example, I feel that Donna and Janine do not get enough of a personality that they deserve. Secondly, the novel has many unnecessary details. I understand that several quips and situations are due to Rhett and Link’s real experiences, but some remarks only provide comedic relief. Plus, a non-Mythical-Beast will possibly be confused from those references. Not to mention that I was not born before the 90s, so I might have missed some thoughts or jokes(?).
Still, don’t get me wrong, the novel was amazing! Any vices can be easily forgiven because the story was so fun. I could barely put the book down.
