Brief Encounter is hands down, one of the best films I have ever set eyes on. The spectacular acting, directing, plot, and music make it into a classic spectacle and a real treat to watch. First of all, the story that plays out in the movie is so deeply tragic. What could be worse than knowing that you can see the person you love most only a handful of times? The conflict is so moving, so sad, and so tragic. Plus, the outstanding acting of Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard makes the film feel so vivid and real; when watching, one feels the flurry of emotions that surround the lovers and wants to say something, do something, to make conditions better. Finally, the music. The Music! Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is so moving and passionate on its own, but when intertwined with such a powerful movie, it enhances the story immensely. Rachmaninoff's piece contributes to an overload of emotion and furthers the feelings of sadness that Johnson and Howard are already perfectly conveying. I give Brief Encounter the highest marks and would suggest it to anybody searching for a great love story, great acting, and some especially great music. It is a tragic story, but the things we learn from tragedies, like strength, gratitude, and love, are what showcase our humanity most.
RIP Celia Johnson
RIP Trevor Howard
RIP Sergei Rachmaninoff
