Nothing that happens in this show follows any form of logic. It starts with NASA sending a team to the moon, en-route to Mars, WHILE THEIR COMMANDER IS UNDER INVESTIGATION!!! And no, she wasn't held back from the mission. She was allowed to leave to go into space with her crew during an active investigation to determine if she was even fit to do the thing they just flung her into space to do... This is one of those shows where all of the drama would have been resolved in under a minute if just one person had anything resembling common sense.
