To Kill a Mocking Bird, Harper Lee, 1960
First read: 1 year ago (read thrice since)
Atticus Finch is life goals, isn't he? Everyone who has read this book would have either imagined themselves as Atticus Finch, helping the oppressed or would have thought about inculcating his principles in their lives.
The main reason why this book is still considered a classic could easily be it's relevance. Racism, parenting, oppression, morals and bigotary are shown in plain view with strong and satire theme.
#blacklivesmatter is one of the base plots of this book and we know how relevant it is today.
And what a way to present a story of this genre! From the eyes of 2 children, asking right questions at the right time. How nice the world would be if the elders see it the same way as children.
Scott, Jem (and Dill) are too curious to find about Boo radley and their curiousness is amicably passed to the readers too. Specially the Jury scenes - edge of the seat. Another example of brilliant writing.
Though this story has many characters with a decent depth and many side stories going on to establish the morale of each character, the universally accepted hero is Father Finch. Atticus's parenting style with deep-rooted morality and genuineness is built up so well, that we can't choose to avoid it.
His quote "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience" largely covers the theme of the book and can be taken home by anyone.
This novel is a part of USA's school syllabus. It's high time to include it in Indian syllabus irrespective of the boards! The kind of impression it can make on a children is much huge than for an adult.
If you are a beginner in novel reading, suggest you to start with this one.
