This book is a powerful way of teaching kids/adults/teachers/families about the real state the world is in.
This book may NOT be for people who believe that they don’t see colour or that beauty lies within and will win or the rest of those other safe clichés plus Kumbaya. Those people are scared. This book has nothing to do with white shaming.
I guess for people who believe it is white shaming that they are ashamed of what happened and what is happening and don’t want to admit there is a crisis going on. I see that. That would feel shameful. Remember, Black people did not abduct white people and make them build their country. That was whiteness. Slavery:whiteness police brutality:whiteness -
Higginbotham wants no part of it and wants kids to be aware of what is up and coming for them. She says, “Racism was not your idea. You don’t need to defend it.” If you believe that, you should not feel white-shamed.
This book is an excellent beginning of race/whiteness talk.
