The Book Thief is a tremendously powerful portrayal of life under the Nazis, especially as it was experienced by German youth. This is a tough story told about a horrendous time, and there's plenty of grief, as well as violence and cruelty. This is a devastatingly powerful book that deserves several re-readings. The story binds the reader till the end of it and you find several moments where you just stop yourself and go through the same lines again to let them penetrate in your mind and soul. The book revolves around not just one character, rather maintains a beautiful balance throughout.
This book will educate readers about living under Nazi rule, and inspires them to think about human nature and why some heroic people are able to put their lives on the line to do what they know is right.
But ultimately the book is a portrait of the triumph of spirit and humanity. It's definitely a book worth reading and everyone should at least once in their human life.
