An excellent game! After scrolling over this a few times in the PlayStation store then noticing it on sale again I decided to buy it, and have not regretted it since. Going in to this game without playing the first, I had no idea what to expect.
Within the first 5 minutes, I died quite a few times trying to get a hang of the game play and fighting mechanics, once I got this down I was hooked. The biggest problem I had with this game was putting it down.
I was farming limbs for parts and new sets, wanted to get to that next area to see what new sets I could get from the enemies and farm more parts to make them, all while trying to stay alive and hone my skills into perfect blocks for those beautiful take-downs.
While the level design is fairly open, you should venture forth only at your own risk as some areas are designed once you level your gear a little more than the scrap you have at the start.
With enemies of varying difficulty, ranging from hard to insanely hard, you will find that your vital signs are fairly often not able to be found. Although the feeling you get when you finally take down that new enemy, or block his big hit that almost one hit you last time, to then push back and cut off his head, or take his right arm as a trophy along with his weapon, it is quite exhilarating.
The bosses in this game are designed in great detail and their fighting mechanics are unique which makes it great all around. For example, there are 3 bosses with similar looks and names but they fight differently, so trying the tricks you learned to defeat one will not work on the others. Its great!
If you don't like getting killed, this is not the game for you. If you like fortnite or other similar games, this is likely not the game for you. If you like the play-style of Dark Souls, Bloodbourne or similar games, then this is definitely one to pick up.
If the day comes when a Surge 3 is released i will be getting it as soon as it hits the shelf. My reason for this being only 4 stars instead of 5, its such a short game. I have played it through, thoroughly, in 30 hours. I missed one quest line, though completed all of the others and it took a mere 30 hours. I have begun NG+ on this game, and can say I was definitely surprised at how the NG+ mechanics work and look forward to the next 30 odd hours to see what else there is afterwards!
ProTip: Get a swear jar, at the end of this game you can treat yourself to a very nice dinner, or bottle of whatever you drink. Or even get that nice bit of jewellery for the Mrs that was always too expensive, you now have the money for it.
*EDIT* I read a couple of other reviews below mine, one talks about the FPS being sub-par, playing on PS4 Pro I had no issues whatsoever with this in Gideons Rock, or anywhere else, and another was no fast travel and no maps to reference, these are both incorrect. You unlock a fast travel feature later in the game, and there are maps everywhere you just need to know where to look. You do not get one in your inventory which I love! it makes me explore more, and if you don't have it to rely on, it helps you navigate a lot better later in the game.
