The modernising of the characters leaves out the depth of emotion expressed in the novel and earlier adaptations. Anne behaves like a drunken college girl, Capt. Wentworth is boring & there is no real chemistry between these two. The movie had some comic moments, but overall I was bored. The best acting was by Richard Grant and the actress who played Mary. The others may be good actors, but their talent is not visible in this movie. Scenery was lovely, but everything else was flat. It was very disappointing. The more recent adaptation of Emma with Jonny Flynn was far better. It was modernised without losing the emotion and joy of the novel. I forced myself to watch to the end, hoping it would improve, but it never did. The best thing about an Austen book, and adaptations of them is what is not said. This movie overtly said too much in the dialogue , and in so doing, lost all its charm!
