When you change the integrity of the characters you have changed the story entirely. What was beautiful about the books was how complex and real the characters are. They were simple every day people who grew up through the course of the story into the heroโs that are extraordinary. The growth of a character is what can make a story wonderful and the books demonstrate that so well. The show leaves much to be desired. To make a show with so much available material and then to add to it with tired cliches is just sad and ruins something that could have been great. The forced love triangle that doesnโt exist in the books is pathetic and boring, itโs been done so many times. The books while having romantic interests didnโt focus on them and the story was better for it. For the show to focus on this to try and imitate other shows demonstrates a lack of creativity and intelligence from the script writers.
On another note the costumes were a let down, while there are a couple of show stopping looks, Rosmond Pikes costumes, many looked like they went to a second hand store and looked for low budget Renaissance costumes. Another let down was the costume and makeup for Loial. He barely looks like a different species, which if you read the books they have a very specific look. And while I understand some editing to adjust to a screen does happen, it was hardly a worthy transformation for this character. The actor has the perfect voice, but the costume/makeup department did not do the character justice at all!
