Rabbi Zalman Schachter-shalomi presents himself throughout this book as an Orthodox rabbi who has the spiritual and moral authority to determine how one should live and die. The reality is, he is as far from Halachic Judaism as they come, representing perhaps the worst of Liberal American Judaism in the 20th century. In addition to that, despite being considered a pioneer for women’s leadership in Liberal Judaism, it is abundantly clear that the man is deeply misogynistic and cared for the opinions of no one but himself and those he blatantly name-drops in this book, (none of whom are women).
However, if you want to read a book about a man who’s been married 4 times (each wife younger than the last) with 11 kids he hardly ever saw, then took some LSD to “loosen” his mind, then this is a GREAT book for you!
