If you want a true sequel of ATLA this is not it. I was extremely disappointed with the direction this show was taken, since it had so much potential. If you want a show with the bending of Avatar, with science fiction inspired mecha, and a strange amalgamation of 1920s New York with the world of Avatar (that makes Korra feel more like a superhero than an Avatar) this might be the show for you. I believe the shows departure from its predecessor starts with the bizarre addition of large amounts of technology in a world that arguably doesn't need it. In ATLA the world is explained to be driven by mankind's mastery of the elements, the little technology we do see are tools of war made by the Fire Nation (one could say that their use of these machines showcases their hubris and the denial of the world's spiritual balance). Another beloved part of ATLA was the small cast of endearing characters that seemed to balance each other out and develop as characters. In Korra this is replaced by a large cast that arguably dilutes character development, one could even say that the Avatar has very little development although she's the titular character. All in all, the series isn't unwatchable but it was hardly what I was expecting and it is frustrating that the writers were unable to truly capture what made the original so captivating.
