This show got a lot of bad reviews by people who heard about Nightshade, despite many of them not watching the show. My opinion, as a 26 year old who has never been an LGBT ally, is that this show is good. OK?
I just said that both because I thought it was funny and it's what some assume when people say they like Earthspark. As far as LGBT representation goes, including a nonbinary character is mild, especially compared to the [mostly gay] romance that IDW shoved down our throats lol.
So that you understand what kind of person I am, for better or for worse, Iove both TFA and Bayverse. They are my favorites.
I knew Earthspark would be one of my favorite shows when I was still watching the first episode, because not only were the characters realistic in the way they act and treat each other, but the overall vibe is fun and funny. I've gotten a LOT of laughs out of it and there's plenty of meme material that can stand alone. It's definitely a kid's show in that it's often lighthearted, yet it tackles issues such as difficulties in relationships, the fights that can occur, showing that some people are capable of change while others are not, including prejudices and that the Malto family has to navigate, and so on. It even had Crash pull the old "did mom really mean-" to convince Mo that they weren't disobeying their mom lol.
While the show isn't perfect, God knows I cringed at the notorious nonbinary scene with how poorly it was presented, but that is fairly minor compared to how much I enjoyed everything else. I've been waiting so, so long for another Transformers show that makes me feel happy to watch, and this show is what does that for me. Even though I don't see it as better than TFA, I enjoy it deeply and hope that the show can get at least 3 seasons as every other TF show was allowed. It's the kind of show I'd love to say was a good part of my childhood if I happened to be a child. THAT is the amount of happiness it gives me. If you're one of those cranky adults that believe kids stuff should abruptly stop when you reach a certain age, then I guess you're the same person who left a 1 star review. To each his own.
There is also the point that certain topics such as the whole nonbinary thing are not suitable for children because it's not a topic that they would be able to understand or maybe it's just not something you want your kids to know about because you want them to be normal. I get it. You're trying your best as a parent. Just don't show your kids the show. Alright? Great!
