Luhrmann's story-telling approach is nearly pitch-perfect for such an iconic showman as Elvis Presley. His music, and American pop culture in general, are a gift to the world– generously bestowed, chiefly, by African Americans. This truth is made abundantly clear in this spectacular production.
Austin Butler was so convincing as Elvis that he may be permanently type-cast.
The one problem I had with the film was Tom Hanks as the dastardly rotund, Colonel Tom Parker. His prosthetic fat was as convincing as Mike Myers' Fat Scotsman. Every bid of his dialogue seemed caked over in foam and makeup. Horrible casting.
