It wasn't pay to win. There where some items you could only get from the pay shop but I only ever bought the battle pass, which I realized I didn't even really need. Theoretically you could buy those payed items from the shop as well but that wouldn't have been worth any free to players time. Not letting people just trade each other and using their shop as a means to balance the economy was a bad choice for an MMO. The problem with the game was the resource caps. Being limited to how much you could progress and there was no way to pay around that, not that someone should want to. The meta build was blue green dragon token spam and you didn't need a single payed item to do it. The problem with the game was there wasn't enough content to do, there was no semblance of an end game. They even cut out some of the beginning story to "Let players get to the meat of the game" that didn't exist. They refunded everyone's money and are leaving it running to Oct1 cus that's probably how long the lease on their servers lasted. It's a damn shame I was really enjoying the game and wanted to see more story. They should have just used actual cards from MTG (like a few cards where) instead of making up new cards for the sake of the game. It had so much god damned potential.
Another huge issues was how they handled Equipment, more so how they handled the mods on them. Artifact Fragments where basically useless as you got so many so fast you'd always be full. No one actually use the "Zen Market" besides the whales who tried to profit in-game off of it. You saw it shoot up at the start then stagnate as no one would buy Zen for Aether as that directly impacted how fast you where able to progress in the game, off a time limited resource.
Cards went up to rank 10 but you never needed beyond 7 to do "master." With the right builds you where doing it at cards ranked as low at 4. It was totally unbalanced (like you'd expect from MTG) and even with constant changes and nerfs and mechanical shifts it was never enough to make the potential play styles as viable as others.
I'm giving it 4 stars because I really had a lot of hope for this game, it had an insane amount of potential and i got a lot of hours of fun out of it having only spent ten bucks on it, which was refunded to me like everyone who spent any money on it. They could have just taken that money, had every right to, but chose to give it back so the individuals who spent hundreds didn't feel totally shafted. My opinion is probably bias because I don't mind grinding a bit in MMO's. The lack of content made it a chore sometimes but that's when I just stopped playing until a new update made it worth it again.
RIP to a game with more potential then the devs knew what to do with.
