Overall, I liked it as a one time watch with my above thoughts. I watched the film and want to share some honest thoughts. Spoiler Alert: Skip if you want to watch the movie first ARR Music - The songs are magical but they are absent in the film. By and large it could have saved the film had it been there. ARR is struggling to make a impressive BGM. Only few portions of the BGM were good Plot: As a one liner, it suits the title of the movie and kind of impressive. There are several dynamics to it with a lot of grey shades. I enjoyed the twist on seeing a man leading an enterprise identifies a successor only to turn grey when his successor becomes more glorious than him. Also the aspect of how soon a loyal successor turns grey when realizing the mentor is doubting him and the opportunity utilized by other layers in the organization to corrupt the new leader and benefit out of it. This forms the first part. I personally like this cause this is something you experience even at work. You mentor someone and even praise them till they get popular and grow beyond you and you start to feel the jealosy. I also predicted this will not be a regular ganster movie where it will usually be a war between 2 gangs or between a ganster and police and I was happy to be right. We have seen enough of such mass movies. As for the second half, the plot still is good but usual. Basically the comeback of the antagonist but at the screenplay level nothing interesting. I felt this portion would have been great for Rajni,. Trisha's role: I see the romance between Kamal and Trisha as an expression of power. I mean when a person is a leader of a criminal enterprise, why would'nt he not have younger mistresses outside of his marriage. Infact it is something power and money will get you. It is also true that when someone has immense power and money their wives have no choice but to accept the attrocity of the man. And the take over of Trisha by STR symbolizes the transfer of power which is very natural. When a King is defeated, the new King takes over all the women in the Royal harem (andapuram) which shows a transfer of control. Maniratnam: I see maniratnam's touch missing in the movie. The above plot could be converted in a great screenplay. if the movie had Maniratnam's legacy film making style and screenplay, it would have been a genius movie. Having said this, I also feel there is a chance for this movie to become a cult classic or atleast more movies inspires from the characters of Kamal, STR and Trisha.
