First thing first, if you are a person who likes flats or apartments over houses, you are definitely not going to like this film. Secondly, if you donโt have any emotional attachment with your old ancestral house, you wonโt be able to relate to the story and, last but not the least, a very strong statement, if you are greedy and want only โmoneyโ in your life, then Iโm sorry, this is not your cup of tea.
The script showcases a lot of real-life issues in the film where we see a 78-years-old, stingy so-called owner of a mansion is running after money and property for his personal expenses and economical crisis, an elder brother of 3 sisters as well as an intransigent tenant is fighting for their rights in the house even being continuously threatened of throwing out by the โownerโ, corrupt politicians, officers and lawyers are counting their own perks in the name of help, friends and trusted ones are betraying in every turn of the life and many more like this. Although these all are not pleasant sights, here it is funny because the writing is laced with wacky wit. In the end, it is also shown how beautifully all the mess is mucked out.
The script is good enough and contains the real picture of โreforming buildingsโ which eventually is destroying the heritage sites and provenances of India, which is, of course, not expected. In the direction, Shoojit Sircar is always a step ahead than the others and this time too, he is at his best. Although the script is good and direction is even better, the story is slow in the first hour and takes time to set up its world. The second hour goes higher and brings all the twists along with the emotion of having and losing everything.
In acting, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is awesome portraying the character of the โownerโ, Mirza Sheikh. Even if the character has a negative impact, you will love his performance. On the other hand, Ayushmann really deserves an award for his character of Baankey Rastogi, the tenant. Their screen presence brings another layer to the film and it will engage you in a manner that you will keep waiting when they both will be together again. This is really โEk Priceless Jodiโ, indeed. I wish, in the near future, we will watch these two legends on the screen again with another good script.
