I just recently read the particular book that the first show was based on. I found the TV adaptation very disappointing. Seems like six or eight episodes would have been needed to capture the nuances of the book. What's shown instead is a mishmash, with little if any character development. My wife, who has never read any of the books, is liking the TV show. It's probably better for people who are unfamiliar with the books.
