Civilization VII – A Civilization in Decline
I’ve been playing Civilization since the very first entry, and it’s not an exaggeration to say the series has shaped how I think about strategy games. Every version, even the rough ones, brought something new while still feeling like Civilization. That legacy ends here.
Civilization VII feels like it was made by people who didn’t understand why players fell in love with this franchise in the first place. The pacing, the tone, the core loop of exploring, building, and competing, all of it feels hollow and foreign. The charm and strategic depth that once made every turn feel meaningful have been replaced by mechanics that seem designed to chase trends rather than refine what worked.
Civ VII changes everything that gave the series its soul. The interface feels disconnected, and the sense of progression that once pulled you through the ages has been replaced by something mechanical and uninspired.
I wanted to love this game. I’ve been there for every launch, every expansion, every high and low. But this time, it’s clear that Firaxis needs to do some real soul-searching. They’ve lost sight of what made Civilization special, and that’s heartbreaking for a fan who’s been here since 1991.
Unless there’s a radical course correction, Civilization VII will be the first Civ I uninstall for good.
