The Regime is a twisted, outrageous love story that mixes serious themes of politics, culture and socioeconomics with a rich female-centric parody that only Kate Winslet could pull off. While walking through the palace, in rooms that are so magnificently ornate they can only be described as "operatic", the Chancellor shares with her guest, "This used to be a hotel." There are so many tongue in cheek moments like this, you'll miss them if you blink. I love how the protagonist is able to wield power and make it seem believable and comical at the same time, like when Winslet sings, "If you leave me now" with her husband at the piano. It's her unique way of greeting her international dignitaries to a State dinner and she's singing to them totally off key! She's completely clueless as to how others see her.
I see some bad reviews and it makes me wonder what type of lens these people are watching through because so far, this series has me counting down to Sundays. My advice: don't pay attention to the naysayers and tune in to this bizarre, funny, visually stunning, mentally stimulating, cinematic masterpiece of a series.
