The first season riffs on the tone of classic crime thrillers while incorporating a dark, romantic soundtrack, incredible character performances and a tight, dynamic and exciting script, adding a unique flair. There seam to be a lot of criticisms that the first season is unrealistic. This show has a fiction-focused, campy tv thriller vibe, if you're not into that to some degree, it might not be for you. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are fantastic in the lead roles and the show succeeds at gender reversing some of the classic crime-thriller storylines.
The second season reflects this tone well, revisiting spectacular locations and similar themes. It was entertaining enough despite being a slight let down after the first.
However, three episodes into the third season and I'd say confidently that the show has lost it's charm. The characters are being written in a way that is inconsistent with the way they were originally written, often saying and doing things they wouldn't have in seasons one and two. The plot is tiresome and unexciting and the pacing is questionably slow. The characters intentions are blurred over and crucial elements left unexplained. It really has gone in a strange direction. A main character is killed off in the first episode and replaced by a random new character who is never mentioned in the earlier seasons. As with all of the new characters, this one totally lacks any real depth or the whimsy and realism that defined the original characters. The third season adds nothing new to the already existing plots and feels as though it is attempting to ride off of the success of some of the interesting and unconventional plot devices without adding anything new at all. Thus making the show feel tired and used. Very disappointing.
Highly recommend seasons one and two.
