White Lotus is a dark tragicomedy that takes its time to develop the numerous, parallel storylines of its characters. The acting is strong pretty much from top to bottom, with a particularly compelling performance from the lovely Alexandra Daddario and her mesmerizing, amazingly expressive eyes. The show takes aim at a range of 21st century hot-button cultural issues—from rich white people privilege to racism and exploitation of brown people—but does so mostly with a healthy dose of skepticism and snark. At a few points I thought the writing did get a bit culturally preachy and veered into stereotypes here and there, but only around the edges. And in keeping with the neo-noir-ish approach, it culminates in divorce, assault, felony burglary, drug-fueled sex partying, defecation in a suitcase, and homicide. But the main characters (except for the dead one) all progress mentally, emotionally and spiritually despite all of the dysfunction that they both perpetrate and are surrounded by. 4.50 stars rounded up.
