Why this book was titled Educated is beyond me. I was expecting a book about an uneducated young girl who went against the odds and educated herself to change the life she knew. Maybe that was 5% of the book.
This is a book about abuse, period. Physical, mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual abuse. Had I known that at the beginning, I would've never read it.
I don't find Ms. Westover to be a heroine; I was more frustrated with her constant desire to return to her abusive home and family.
Her educational journey, which should've been the bulk of the story, can be read in the front flap.
Finishing the book I did not get the sense that Ms. Westover was "educated" at all. Yes she had the degrees and diplomas but the entire book was about her dysfunctional family. At a time when she could've written a book about her uneducated self succeeding through the most challenging universities, she instead wrote the entire book about her abusive family. It just proves how strong of a grip the Westovers have over her, still. Finishing the book I got the sense that Tara will forever remain on Buck's Peak.
