I wanted to give this show a fair shake because the movie Willow was a huge favorite of my 80s childhood and I was super excited to hear about this show when it was announced. Needless to say it’s been a letdown. There are some aspects that were enjoyable but the casting was the biggest flop. Ruby Cruz. Yeesh. Every time she opens her mouth or does anything like “acting” I feel like I’m trapped in watching a Disney Channel show like Wizards of Waverly Place or something. Of all the “kids” in this show, the only one with any tolerability and skill in acting is Erin Kellyman. Another annoying silly thing is the incorporation of modern music when they’re trying to sell a complex lore filled fantasy world. With movies like A Knights Tale, it added to the humor and focus of the movie, but with this it is cheesy and a distraction. Lastly, the trolls. Credit for the original movie for attempting to make what a troll was in the fantasy world something weird, hairy and yelling all the time. Contrast with LOTR and HP and then to see what this version of was gave off some serious cheesy Star Trek Deep Space Nine makeup and script. I’ll finish on a positive note with that I loved seeing the original movie actors coming back and the flashback scenes were nice, but overall I just couldn’t help but feeling let down.
