I see a lot of negative reviews from people who were around to see the original version (I was in high school around the time the original aired on television and I did watch the original religiously, like I did all my "teen shows" back in the day before streaming existed and DVR was hardly something most of us could afford in my neighborhood). I really liked the original, but honestly not enough to remember the storylines or the character portrayals. There are a lot of tv shows from my youth that, at the time it aired, I was a huge fan of, but there are only a few I still rewatch today (Buffy being one of them). I'm glad because not remembering what the original is like (although I do enjoy Shiri Appleby and have seen some of her other acting work) has allowed me to come into this show with an open mind. Much like my beloved Full House (one of my all time favorite sitcoms), the reboot will never hold a flame to the original but I enjoyed its reboot for what it was. I love Roswell, New Mexico. I love its new character portrayals. I think Liz and Max have chemistry up the ying yang. I will agree that sometimes the gay storyline and political commentary comes off a bit forced and I think they definitely could've smoothed it out better and made it feel more natural. But I like the new version of Liz. I like her strength and ferocity and passion. I think everything about this show represents the current climate, the current era, and even the modern day audience. If you're someone who loved the original, pretend this isn't a reboot because it pretty much isn't (except a few nods here and there) and you might find yourself enjoying it a bit. BTW, I am also a fan of Blue Bloods which leans a lot more conservative than Roswell, New Mexico, so for me, I can easily overlook political messaging so long as there is good writing, excellent directing, characters/couples with chemistry, and a show with a purpose and a story to tell.
