Ok so lemme begin by saying, regardless of if u have seen the first one or not, this is definitely a must watch. The music is good, SOME characters were good, it was funny and overall a good family movie.
But, this movie lacked something which the first movie had. Emotion. The old version was a big part of my childhood growing up and to this day I can’t stop crying when I see the original one. But to be really honest, the new movie didn’t really give me the same emotion. I didn’t really feel as connected to the characters as I did in the first.
Donald Glover to me was a really good fit for Simba. But we all know Matthew Broderick was and always will be the best. Beyoncé was good as Nala. And Timon and Pumbaa were the highlight of the film.
Although I didn’t particularly like Zazu or Scar. They just weren’t up there. Zazu seemed to be trying to hard to sound like Rowan Atkinson. And Scar was too bland. Not narcissistic enough. But.. the most prominent character. Mufasa.
Now u may have heard that the same voice actor from the 1994 film is voicing him again. Now personally I was really excited for this. As Mufasa has a personal connection to me. But to be really honest I just didn’t feel it in this one. Not sure why. Just didn’t.
Now to be really honest this would’ve been a good movie if I had never seen the first one. But we r doing a lot of comparisons to the first. So as a single movie, this was really good. But in comparison to the first one. This just wasn’t good enough. I would rate this a solid 6/10. HAKUNA MATATA EVERYONE!
