Finally a movie that Marvel's God of Thunder deserves! The studio went with a brave director choice with Taika Waititi and it pays off in a big way. Thor: Ragnarok is a crowd-pleasing blockbuster that proves that even an overplayed genre like superhero films can still deliver with the right talent behind it. The cast is wonderful and almost everyone gets a chance to shine. Expect lots of quips, slow motion and badass poses. The big Thor/Hulk gladiator fight is the film's centerpiece but there's a lot more to it.
Two things really stood out for me - the visuals and the music. This is an extremely good looking film and some scenes could easily be heavy metal album covers. It's full of color and I loved how certain shots were framed, very cool stuff. I was also quite impressed by the synth-heavy soundtrack. It is very different from the usual (and forgettable) scores from the other MCU movies and goes really well with the visuals. I also loved how Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" was used in certain scenes. In short, this is pretty much how I'd expect a Thor movie to look and sound.
Story-wise it is standard comic-book fare but done with a ton of style. The character banter as usual is great and there are some really cool cameos including an unexpected one that was quite hilarious. The entire finale and the ending also took me by surprise as it took on a direction that I did not expect - and I loved that.
This is also a very funny movie, but that's usually expected from this franchise at this point. While a lot of the lines and scenes are hilarious it does get a bit tiring at times. How many times has Marvel done the whole "audience expects a character to do something badass/cool and he/she trips and falls" thing? It happens way too often in this movie and that thing got old way back in Iron Man 3. There's also a joke during a very serious scene towards the end that really took me out of the moment.
But I'm nitpicking, overall Thor: Ragnarok is a spectacle that deserves to be seen on a giant screen. It more than makes up for the two lackluster Thor movies and is one of the most enjoyable entries in the Marvel franchise yet.
PS: If someone ever makes a new He-Man & The Masters of the Universe movie, I really hope they do it in the style of Thor: Ragnarok.
