I had mixed feelings about this movie but I enjoyed Halle Bailey’s performance. I loved her singing and the soundtrack, but what bothered me was that the “Daughters of Triton” song was gone and the concert at the beginning of the original movie was gone. I did like how the sisters looked though and how they were all of different races. One of the scene’s in the movie when Ariel and her sisters are cleaning up ship wreck scraps from coral, one of the sisters says something about Ariel’s mom, addressing her as that sister’s OWN mother. This made no sense to me considering they can’t all have the same mom since they’re all of different races. I liked the cgi and animations underwater, and I thought that Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian looked good. I was on the fence about Scuttle being female, but other than that I enjoyed Awkwafina’s performance and her singing. What really bothered me the most was Prince Eric and why he was British, like the movie takes place in Ancient Greece since King Triton is the son of Poseidon. So why is Eric even British and why does he have a mother??? In the original movie his parents were dead and Grim was in desperate need of getting Eric a wife to become king. With his mother alive, he wouldn’t even need to be king or look for a wife in the first place! For Vanessa’s song, I really did enjoy it BUT I disliked how it left out the original lyrics when Scuttle found her singing in the mirror. “Soon I’ll have that little mermaid and the ocean will be mine.” I wish they had included that instead of her just singing “La la dee la la da.” Melissa McCarthy’s performance was alright as Ursula. I didn’t really like how they did her makeup and I thought that her face wasn’t as animated. Her makeup was suppose to be like a drag queen’s, to me it looked too simple. In the scene where Ariel was making a deal with Ursula, I didn’t like how they didn’t include a scroll that Ariel had to sign, replacing that with a scale from Ariel’s tail. I felt that Ursula wasn’t as smart, sure she did put the memory spell on Ariel in this version, but when she took the form of Vanessa why didn’t she try to get her and Eric married right away instead of just having a celebration? Why wasn’t Prince Eric completely under Ursula’s spell and still longing for Ariel?Also when Ursula dies, why does triton get brought back to life instead of all the other mer people she killed? I felt like they left out a lot of the story compared to the original film. In a lot of the scenes they just seemed to rush from song to song and didn’t leave enough space in between to fill in some of the plot. This movie had a lot of potential, but I’m kinda disappointed in it. The best thing about this movie is the soundtrack.
