An interesting puzzle game, but it's a total corruption of what paper Mario originally was and what people want it to be. I've been a fan since I played the original on my sister's N64. Getting a puzzle done was fairly easy but rewarding, and then the boss battles were actually challenging if you didn't use real strategy.
Well this game takes that page out of the paper Mario manual and wipes with it. In sticker star, the boss battles only have two potential outcomes for a new player: 1, you load up on stickers and slog your way through a damage race, hoping the completely unseen defence isn't too high so you can actually get more than 1 damage a hit or 2, You load up on the most powerful stickers in the game and best the boss in 1 turn, regardless of skill. There is no strategy, no badges to get a different set of tactics, no levels so that if you lose you can train and come back, none of it. There is only the quality of the stickers you can find, which really only divide out to "weak" and "completely overpowered" in terms of bosses.
I give two stars because the art style is definitely showing evolution from previous paper Mario games, and I appreciate that they at least stylized the game to be even more papery.
That being said, the other 3 of the royal star stickers will remain missing from this review because they forgot to make the game good too.
