The obvious theme is of this movie is school bullying, but the underlying, hidden, and stronger theme here is the loving relationships of people. The lack of which causes the low self esteem that's the root of bullying and the silence of those being bullied, as well as the disconnect of families that causes problems on both sides to occur. What this film shows is that the loving support & connections of all (family, schoolmates, peers, law enforcement, etc.), does help overcome all negativity involved. Great acting for such young main actors!

For me, the science fiction aspect is secondary to the human-relationship aspect (father/son, husband/wife, Space bureaucracy/employees). The outer space scenario can easily have been shifted to any other background. I usually am not a fan of Brad Pitt for the longest time, but his acting here adds to his many trophies. I really enjoyed this movie!
